I grew up in the 80s.
Hip hop was rising to the top and with it came a new slang. It wasn't just fresh anymore, it was dope! I immediately took to this new adjective using it frequently to describe the things I saw or wanted. I even like the way it sounded, strong, finite, when you said it, you meant it.
You reserved it to describe only the best things: Lotto sneakers? Dope. Triple Fat Goose? Dope, name chains, dookie ropes, door knockers and Salt-N-Pepa slant cuts were beyond dope! The word was at its peak, till one day a new word came along…fly. Fly was like the sophisticated sister of dope. It was a smoother way to give a compliment, and while fly was nice, it wasn't dope. It was in my heart, my favorite hip hop word and I never gave it up. Because you see things can be fly, cool, fresh, hot, but only the best things can be dope.
